Story of Soil Winery

Map of Story of Soil in Los Olivos CA

There are those wineries that are raved about and over-hyped so much that sometimes I worry when I go to visit I’m going to be disappointed. This was not the case with Story of Soil.

Story of Soil has been on my list of wineries to visit in Los Olivos for a long time. Everytime I mentioned I was going to visit for the day someone would say, “Have you been to Story of Soil yet?!”

The winery just moved into a new location in Los Olivos so on my last trip I decided it was finally time to pay a visit and I wish I had done so sooner!!

Story of Soil History

If you’re looking for epic, small production wines made by a kickass female winemaker, Story of Soil is a must stop on your next trip to Los Olivos.

Jessica Gasca prides herself on making incredible, small batch, high quality wines. We’re talking 150ish cases of each wine folks. Super small.

She told us amazing stories of wines she’s made and ones that didn’t make the cut because while the wine was perfectly fine, it didnt meet her standards. To me, that’s the kind of wines I want to drink. The wines of someone who is willing to forgo because she wants each wine to be the best of the best. And that’s what they were. Amazing.

The Wine

Story of Soil focuses on single varietal and single vineyard wines. You really get to taste the terroir of each place that the grapes are harvested from.

The wines are sourced from sustainable, organic and biodynamic vineyards. In the winery, the grapes are processed with minimal intervention to give the wines more depth and character.

We tasted through 5 wines on our visit. While I was infatuated with the Syrah because it’s my personal favorite grape, I would recommend trying the Gamay. This wine is made in the style of a Cru Beaujolais and is fantastic. It’s also unique to the area!

My picks:

2019 Martian Vineyard Gamay

2017 Larner Vineyard Syrah
